GPUs for students: the free options and the cheap ones
Published 12 October 2026 · prices on this page are live
Most students do not need to buy a GPU. Free notebooks cover learning, and for a final-year project or a competition you can rent exactly the GPU you need for a few hours, paying only for the time it runs.
Free options
- Google Colab, free tier: a shared GPU, often a 16 GB T4, in a browser notebook. Sessions are limited and disconnect when idle; good for learning and short experiments. See how Colab compares.
- Kaggle Notebooks: free GPU time, commonly about 30 hours a week on a P100 or two T4s, with sessions of up to about 12 hours. Kaggle adjusts the quota, so check your account settings.
When free is not enough
- Your model needs more than 16 GB, for example to fine-tune a 7B–14B language model or to train with FLUX.
- Training takes longer than a session allows, or you cannot risk a disconnect before a deadline.
- You need a server that stays up for a demo, such as a chatbot or an API for your app.
What renting costs a student
You pay only while the machine runs, by the second. On today's board:
| For | USD | INR | NPR |
|---|---|---|---|
| One hour on the cheapest GPU with 12 GB or more | USD 0.09 | INR 9 | NPR 14 |
| A 10-hour project on an RTX 3090 (24 GB) | USD 2.60 | INR 250 | NPR 390 |
| A working day of eight hours on an RTX 4090 | USD 5.04 | INR 488 | NPR 768 |
| A chatbot demo for an evening: a 13B model for four hours on an RTX 3090 | USD 1.04 | INR 100 | NPR 156 |
The smallest top-up is USD 5.00, INR 200 or NPR 200.
Make your credits last
- Write and debug code on a free notebook or your laptop; rent the GPU only for the heavy part.
- Stop the machine as soon as training finishes, or set a timer when you rent.
- Save checkpoints, and download your results or push them to Hugging Face before you destroy the machine.
- Use 4-bit models and QLoRA to fit bigger models on cheaper cards: see which GPU do I need.
For teachers
A teacher can start a class on PowerPod, give each student credits and set limits that students cannot raise. See GPUs for colleges.
Questions
Is there a student discount?
Students in a verified college class can get extra credits on their top-ups. Ask your teacher to start a class.
Do I need a card to pay?
Yes, you pay by card. If you do not have one, your teacher can give you credits from a class instead.
Which GPU should I pick for my project?
The one with just enough memory for your model. The guide to which GPU you need lists the memory each kind of job takes.
